The founding of the University of Milan in 1924 came about with the institution of the first four faculties: Law, Humanities, Medicine and Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences. The event was officially celebrated on 8 December of the same year with a ceremony at Castello Sforzesco (Sforza Castle).
The early years in the history of the University, of which Mangiagalli was Rector until 1926, were followed by a period of continuous growth up until World War Two: the number of students reached 3,000 and the number of faculties increased to six (the Faculties of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine having been added in the ‘30s), located in Città Studi, home to the scientific faculties, and in the historic city centre.

HIV Research in the Erasmus MC is performed by several different departments. Together they form the Erasmus MC HIV Eradication Group (EHEG). The mission of the Erasmus MC HIV Eradication Group (EHEG) is to find a cure for HIV. A cure that is safe and available for every person living with HIV, regardless of who they are or where they live.

After finishing my medical training in Zambia (2008), I completed my medical specialisation and obtained my PhD in Medicine at the Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam. I was selected in the Dutch Resident’s talent class of 2016, conducted a HIV/AIDS fellowship at the Chelsea and Westminster hospital in London (dr. Anton Pozniak), UK, and postdoctoral research in molecular virology (prof.dr.C.A.B. Boucher and dr. T.Mahmoudi).
As consultant internist and infectious diseases specialist I always try to improve the lives of the people with HIV I care for. The core of my HIV cure research therefore aims to translate promising pre-clinical drug discoveries into effective, safe and feasible clinical strategies for which I received an Erasmus MC Fellowship. Also, I setup the aware.hiv project (www.awarehiv.com) to help ending HIV transmission and come to zero new infections with support from the Dutch Federation Medical Specialists.
My research involves large HIV/COVID-19 studies in the Netherlands and crosses borders through a collaboration with Ukraine on the impact of COVID-19 on HIV affected communities. I am a principle investigator in EHEG and the NL4Cure and EU2Cure consortia, member of the scientific committee of the Dutch HIV physician society (NVHB), and faculty member in the European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) Young Investigators.
EU2Cure is important to me as it brings together so many different countries which is crucial in finding a cure for HIV. As both a clinician and basic scientist I see how important it is that all these different people work together.

Katie Hensley combined her medical degree with a master’s degree in Infection and Immunity and graduated cum laude with her thesis titled ‘Identification of HIV indicator conditions and HIV testing in a tertiary health centre’. In her PhD she wants to bridge the gap between the bed and the bedside and work towards finding a cure for HIV.
